Basics of Spinning

Basics of Spinning

In this two-day introductory workshop we review the essential coordination skills and basic techniques every spinner must master to gain beginning-level competence in spinning. We show the refining steps that take the raw wool from the fleece to become fine roving, that is (strands of fiber) and then demonstrate the various steps for spinning the wool into a finished yarn.

We introduce the different tools and equipment necessary for domestic spinning and also discuss the methods and techniques practiced by spinners through the centuries.

During this hands-on workshop you will spin your first roving into yarn. Through teacher-demonstrations we show you how to develop different sizes and types of yarn and explain how they affect the different projects you will encounter as you progress into higher levels of competence. You will blend different colors of prepared roving using wool combs and then make your first skein with blended wool. You will take home two homespun skeins, one natural and one spun from blended wool.

We provide all of the tools and equipment used in this workshop.
