Knitting VI : First Cardigan

9am - 3pm (3-day workshop)

In this three-day workshop you will learn how to knit a simple bulky weight child's cardigan/jacket. (The same pattern is also available in women's sizes. When you have mastered the child's size, you will be able to use the skills learned in this workshop to knit the adult-sized vest if desired.) You will learn to follow a pattern, knit a gauge swatch, knit a garment from the neck down, place markers, increase and decrease stitches, divide your work for sleeves, fashion pockets, use double-point needles to knit sleeves in the round, pick up bound-off stitches to knit a front band and make buttonholes. We will also review how to correct simple mistakes.

The class will meet in three sessions, two weeks apart. After each session, students will work at home to reach a specified point in the project, in order to learn and practice new skills the following class session. Pattern and yarn to make the smallest size cardigan are included in the materials fee. You may bring your own needles or purchase at time of class. Needles specified in the pattern are 24" circular needles sizes US 10 and US 8 and double-point needle sizes US 10 and US 8, or sizes required to get correct gauge.

Pre-requisites: Students should have mastered the basics of knitting and be able to knit in the round on double-pointed needles (skills learned in Knitting I through V or equivalent)
