Spinning on a Traditional Drop Spindle

This practical hands-on workshop provides an inexpensive and simple way of spinning fibers.

Up until the 15th century most yarn for all types of woven fabric, from ship sails to the fine linens of Egypt, was spun using a simple drop spindle. Many people from many different cultures through the ages have used the drop spindle as a simple method for spinning many different types of fiber.

In this workshop you practice spinning with a traditional top-whorl drop spindle. We take you step by step from combing the fleece with wool combs to spinning purchased roving, that is (strands of fiber). You will begin to spin by learning how to "park and draft" your spindle and then proceed to "drop" your spindle. We then teach you how to Andean ply your yarn and then make it into a skein.

At the end of the workshop you will take home a skein of newly spun yarn and a hand turned drop spindle made by one of our craftsmen. This workshop provides a practical introduction to spinning on a conventional spinning wheel and also enables you to spin just about anywhere.
