Discover the Crafts and Skills of Traditional Agrarian Life
![]()
Offering a complete curriculum for gardening, crafts,
homesteading and other essential self-sustaining skills
People in our urban, techno-industrial world, are, in increasing numbers,
reaching back to rediscover essential craft and agrarian homesteading skills.
This is more than a bid for a bit of the peace and calm we associate with
the past. There is a profound purpose and sense of accomplishment in rediscovering
and mastering these skills. There is a sense, too, that these skills and the
associated way of life bring families together and replenish values and integrity
as well as hone manual and intellectual skills. Those who have chosen to learn
and participate in these essential skills also find that the discipline these
skills require develops such character traits as patience, endurance, attentiveness
and perseverance. As many of our pioneering forefathers discovered, when people
regain the ground of personal responsibility, rejecting the claim that the
“good life” means freedom from such responsibility, they taste
the fruit of fulfillment and accomplishment.
Crafts and homesteading skills are generally associated with areas that would, if all life were stripped of the superfluous and reduced to essentials, prove to be the ‘necessaries’ of human existence. So to have the knowledge of these things is to have the knowledge of life’s essentials. In short, it is to know how to live out the very essence of life— it is “real living.” Craft, the Art of Work
Homestead Crafts and Skills
Our curriculum consists of both workshops, with an emphasis on hands-on instruction and skill building, and seminars or classes that are primarily lecture oriented. Our workshops are “project oriented,” and upon completion students will be equipped to implement and practice their new skills at home. Many of our workshops have prerequisites. We therefore ask that you take workshops in the order suggested in our class descriptions found on the following pages. Our teachers, who are experienced craftsmen, farmers and gardeners, are well-qualified to share their knowledge and abilities. To you and your children, 17 years or older, we offer these homesteading crafts and skills workshops. We invite you to participate.Join us at Homestead Heritage Visit Homestead Heritage and Heritage Farm Monday through Saturday for demonstrations and walking tours, including:
